Xbox 360 Goes Open in the Community

xboxMicrosoft made an announcement at the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco that Xbox LIVE members will be to play, rate and share community created games. The community games created by the Microsoft’s XNA Game Studio software and XNA Creators Club members can be submitted for distribution on Xbox LIVE. Then a game will undergo a thorough peer-review process and be evaluated for accuracy in representation and appropriateness. Community member game developers will be able use the distribution service on Xbox LIVE by the end of this year. By then Xbox 360 games library will have close to 1000 titles.

This should be an industry first, who could have known that Microsoft would be the first to promote open distribution in gaming.

“The time has come for the games industry to open its doors to all game creators, enabling anyone to share their creations with the world, said John Schappert, corporate vice president of LIVE, Software and Services for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “Our goal is to drive a creative and social revolution in games with the same transformative power that we’ve seen in digital music and video sharing.

The first seven titles created using XNA Game Studio 2.0 are now available for Xbox 360 owners to download from Xbox LIVE Marketplace:
