DivX Shuts Down Stage6

DivX have announced that they are to shut down their popular video sharing site Stage6 and its last operating day will be 28 February 2008. Videos uploaded to Stage6 were of DivX format which made it possible for content creators to showcase high quality videos on the web. DivX say the reason for pulling the plug is that Stage6 grew bigger beyond expectations (well theirs) and it was increasingly becoming hard and very expensive to operate. Secondly since Stage6 wasn’t really part of the core business of DivX it was unreasonable to be putting more focus on it and diverting resources away from promoting and developing the DivX products. But one would also suspect that the reason they shutting down Stage6 is because the increased amount of pirated content being uploaded to the site. Thus in trying to avoid lawsuits removing these videos was just too much to pay for a side project.
” So why are we shutting the service down? Well, the short answer is that the continued operation of Stage6 is a very expensive enterprise that requires an enormous amount of attention and resources that we are not in a position to continue to provide. There are a lot of other details involved, but at the end of the day it’s really as simple as that…
…After February 28, Stage6 will cease to exist as an online destination. But the larger DivX universe will continue to thrive. Every day new DivX Certified devices arrive on the market making it easy to move video beyond the PC. Products powered by DivX Connected, our new initiative that lets users stream video, photos, music and Internet services from the PC to the TV, are hitting retail outlets.”
