Microsoft fined $1.3 billion by the EU

microsoftMicrosoft has been fined 899 million euros ($1.35bn) by the European Union for charging too much for their software information to rival software companies that create software compatible with Windows products.

This is the second time the EU has penalized Microsoft in the 2004 antitrust rulings. The initial fine was 497 million euros in 2004 after the ruling, then the EU later fined Microsoft a further 280.5 million euros in mid 2006 for failing to comply with the sanctions. The the second fine is for failing to obey the antitrust order until October 2007 and it is also the largest fine ever to be given to a single company by the EU.

Microsoft have brushed aside the fine saying it was for the things that happened long time ago. Last week they announced that they will let the Windows documentation available to developers for free to encourage “interoperability”
