Silverlight Extends to Mobile Devices: Nokia Go First

silverlight-logo.pngNokia have announced that they will be using Microsoft’s Silverlight in the forthcoming mobile phone models; the Series 60 Symbian OS smartphones, Series 40 and Nokia Internet tablets devices.

Silverlight which is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering next-generation media experiences and rich interactive applications like Adobe’s Flash will help developers create create rich, interactive applications that has cross-platform interoperability and reliability.

Silverlight already has support for Mac OS and Linux and continues to steadily increase its presence. So far its been used on thousands of applications and in organizations that include the NBA, NBC Universal and Olympics. It is also been widely reported that Microsoft might soon announce an offline Silverlight platform to compete with Adobe AIR but nevertheless this extension to mobile devices is a huge move for Microsoft as mobile computing seems to be really taking off.
