Google Gears Goes Mobile

googleGoogle have launched Google Gears for mobile that will let users run web applications offline. Just like the standard Google Gears (still in Beta), Gears for mobile is an open source browser extension that enables web applications to provide offline functionality. Developers can use the extension to create web apps that run offline using JavaScript APIs that locally store and serve application resources and store data in a fully search-able relational database.

Google Gears for mobile will first be available for Internet Explorer Mobile on Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices, and then other mobile device platforms like Opera Mobile and iPhone Safari. Google claims that mobile web applications developers have already started integrating Gears for mobile into their online services (and we believe them).

With Microsoft’s Silverlight going mobile with Nokia (check post below) and expected to announce Silverlight’s offline web app support, the competition for creating offline web apps heats up. Will Adobe AIR extend to mobile?
